The Houses of the Birth Chart

The following diagram of a chart reveals the order of the houses as well as their sign associations.

The diagram above shows the division of a chart into houses and quadrants.

It also reveals the sign associations with the houses. For example, house 1 or I is associated with Aries, although it doesn’t have the exact same meaning as Aries (it’s an association only).

The elements of the signs (fire, earth, air, and water) and the modes or modalities of the signs (cardinal, fixed, and mutable) are depicted.

The Ascendant is abbreviated as ASC and is the beginning point of the first house.

The IC is the Innum Coeli and is the cusp of the fourth house.

The DC or DSC is the Descendant and the cusp of the seventh house.

The MC is the Midheaven and is the cusp of the tenth house.

Please note that in most house systems, the ASC, IC, DSC, and MC are at the cusp of these houses, but not in all.

The quadrants divide the houses into four groups of three as follows:

Quadrant I (Houses 1, 2, 3):
Personal Identity – Awareness of Self
Quadrant II (Houses 4, 5, 6): Personal Expression – Integration of Self with Environment
Quadrant III (Houses 7, 8, 9): Social Identity – Awareness of Others
Quadrant IV (Houses 10, 11, 12): Social Expression – Integration of Self with Society
